  25. ZIP SHELL FOR WINDOWS AND DOS

  29. PKZip and PKUnzip from PKWare are now the industry standard for
  30. lossless compression of files. They have a host of features, and even
  31. support the addition of descriptions to compressed files. However,
  32. they are also command driven, which makes them difficult to use for
  33. non experts. In addition, there is no way to add or extract 4Dos file
  34. descriptions.

  36. There are other shells for PKZip & PKUnzip on the market. Some of them
  37. are undoubtedly quite good. But what I wanted was a program that would
  38. let you tag files to add to a ZIP file, and then add them along with
  39. their 4Dos file descriptions. In the same way I wanted to be able to
  40. tag the files in ZIP file, and extract them along with their 4DOS file
  41. descriptions. I also wanted to be able to see the descriptions along
  42. with the files. None of the available shells I looked at would do
  43. this.

  45. In 1989 I wrote the first version of ZIP.EXE to do this in a DOS
  46. environment. When I moved to Windows 3.0, I became fed up with having
  47. to open a DOS window to go and zip or unzip files. Finally I got
  48. around to writing a Windows equivalent that could be launched from
  49. program manager - ZIPW.EXE.
  50.  
  51. Both these programs serve the same function that of adding files to
  52. and extracting files from a ZIP file, while automating the add/extract
  53. of the associated 4DOS descriptions. Of the two, ZIPW is more
  54. sophisticated, using as it does the Multiple Document Interface to
  55. permit you to work on more than one ZIP file at a time. One of these
  56. days I will get around to rewriting the Dos version to provide similar
  57. features.

  59. Until then, ZIPW is V2.0, while ZIP is only V1.2. Both support the new
  60. V2.04g of PKZip and PKUnzip which is the latest version at time of
  61. writing.

  84. The windows libraries are supplied under license from Microsoft. You
  85. are free to use them provided you own a copy of Microsoft Windows.

  87. PKZ204 is supplied by PKWare as a fully functional evaluation copy of
  88. PKZIP and PKUNZIP. If you decide to use the programs after the
  89. evaluation period then you are required to make a payment to PKWare
  90. for a license to use the programs.

  92. ZIP.EXE and ZIPW.EXE are fully functional programs provided for
  93. evaluation. If you continue to use these programs after a 30 day
  94. evaluation period then you are required to purchase a license from
  95. Fugue Software.

  98. assured of receiving quality software.

  129. ============

  134.         Place the disk in your drive, and from program manager type
  135.              RUN a:SETUP.EXE
  136.         or   RUN b:SETUP.EXE
  137.  
  138.         Answer the question about the destination drive. The software
  139.         should be installed automatically, and a Program manager group
  140.         should be created. You can later move the icons to another
  141.         group if you desire.

  143.         If you do not have a copy of PKZIP & PKUNZIKP, you should then
  144.         follow the DOS installation instructions to install PKZip &
  145.         PKUnzip on your disk.
  146.  
  147.         If all you received was the file ZIPW20.ZIP or ZIPW20.EXE,
  148.         then all the files have been archived into this file. In this
  149.         case you need to extract all the files to either your hard
  150.         disk or your floppy disk before you can run SETUP:

  152.         From DOS, copy the file to yor hard disk and extract the files
  153.  
  154.            for .ZIP     type in     PKUNZIP -E  ZIPW20

  156.            for .EXE     type in     ZIPW20

  158.         Then run SETUP from program manager as described above
